A Deeper Dive into the South West Migration
HireAHelper notes that there is a pattern that emerges on the city-level. The cities we’ve popularized for growth and success and romanticized in movies and music actually had more people move out than in!
As a former resident of Jersey City, NJ (recently voted as the most diverse city in America in 2020), I understand first-hand why cities like NYC, San Francisco, Chicago and LA all find themselves losing more residents than the ones they’ve welcomed in 2019. The notoriously high cost of living, increasing tax rates and overcrowded streets and overpopulation are all deterrents for movers in the big cities.
Smaller cities such as Mesa and Scottsdale, AZ, and Sarasota, FL saw the reverse effect, experiencing over 50% more movers in than out.
Other findings worth highlighting:
Scottsdale, AZ topped the charts with twice (108%) as many people moving IN vs. OUT
Top State by overall move-in numbers was Florida
Top net-gain State was Idaho, with 48% more people moving IN vs. OUT
1 in 6 (16%) found a new home across state lines
Most people moved to a place within the same county (62%)
